[Box Of Wonder] Hal Willner "Night Music" SE01 part 1 (1988)

It was the greatest show on television

truly great (and surreal) moments include:

- Sonny Rollins sitting in with Leonard Cohen and Was (Not Was) doing "Who By Fire"
- Nick Cave, Charlie Haden, and Toots Thielemans getting together to play "Hey Joe."
- John Cale, Richard Thompson and Shawn Colvin trading verses on Cale's dolorous version of "Heartbreak Hotel" with BJ Cole on pedal steel and Sanborn on sax
- Todd Rundgren, Ellen Foley and Taj Mahal performing a scene from 'HMS Pinafore,' with Sanborn, Pat Metheny, Christian Marclay and the Night Music band all dressed as sailors behind them.
- Conway Twitty singing "It's Only Make Believe" with The Residents dancing behind him in eyeballs.

Before spreading out all of these delicious tracks, I had to pay tribute or thank to some specific folks leading up to this point. There's a guy (lucky) at "radiohoerer", a german blog dedicated to our beloved german rock & jazz radio feature authors - the blog is also labeled "Friends of Alan" (Bangs, maybe well known for his Rockpalast appearancs), who opened this little treasure for me in a comment to a post on a feature by Karl Lippegaus concerning Hal Willner. Fun fact: It was Lippegaus with a feature in 1992 making me aware and a fan of Hal Willner.

Lucky linked to a page that opened the door to kind of Aladdin's Cavern full of sparkling jewelry: The complete Hal Willner's Midnight Music Archive ...

So to me the "ear is the way", i'm not really interested in this video stuff, i prefer my imagination while listening. And I like things well cut and in a format to listen to it on my MP3player (I don't use smartphones ...). What I did? I downloaded the shows, extracted to sound, decoded it to .wav, did the cuts and recoded it to .flac. I know: They're not really "Flac", but that's the way not to loose more quality than to recode the .wav to .mp3. If you like to do that, just do it ...

This is the first part of the result, Season 1 1989. Any correction is welcomed, sorry in advance if I made some stupid cut - but I can promise that this will be kind of paradise offering appearances by Lou Reed, John Cale, Dr John, Willie Dixon, Lounge Lizards, John Zorn, Boz Scaggs, Jack Bruce, Santana, Mark Knopfler, Randy Newman, Dizzie Gillespie and many many many more like a very young version of Jools Holland. Maximum cult level ...
