The Notwist - Elbjazz 2021

From the small Bavarian town of Weilheim to the big, bad world: 30 years after they formed, The Notwist are still one of Germany’s most in-demand groups internationally. The two constants in “Germany’s biggest small band” (Die Welt) have always been the brothers Markus and Micha Acher. Their albums regularly hit the Top 10 in the German charts, and that despite the fact that The Notwist stand for maximum unpredictability. Anything can happen when the Bavarians give concerts: indie-rock, noise jazz, kraut, minimal music or electronic pop. And above it all, Markus Acher’s delicate singing. The Notwist are sophisticated, but never overly intellectual; catchy, but never trying too hard to please – and they are very danceable. An amazingly eccentric band for whom “technology is never a gimmick, but always used only to seduce” (Die ZEIT).

Fehler Kuti - 2021 Elbjazz

The newest project from the Weilheim surroundings of the band The Notwist emerges under a name that will get music connoisseurs scratching their heads: Fehler Kuti (Error Kuti). Isn’t it a bit odd to parody the name of the legendary Nigerian afro-beat musician Fela Kuti? However, in Julian Warner’s project, the creative power of the error is actually reflective of the musical manifesto: the synthesizers whirr, the beats buzz and throb. Someone with a passion for experimentation has clearly been borrowing Markus and Micha Acher’s fleet of synthesizers. The debut album of the “singing cultural anthropologist” (to quote Julian Warner himself) Fehler Kuti is called Schland is the place for me, and features addictive rhythms and krauty keyboards. And when Warner sings about “interracial love”, there is a monotone quality reminiscent of the avant-space-jazz of the great Sun Ra.
