[ Missing from FBS ] Grand Duchy: Rare & Popular

Bands from the "Grand Duchy of Luxembourg" aren't very well known outside the small country, even Luke Haas, musician, comic-author, did his best to write the history of Luxembourg's Rock & Roll in (afaik) two books. I purchased the first one at the end of the 80ies in a local german grocery, but, you know: books. Someone's says "Oh, beautiful book, can i take it with me to read it at home?", and then they disappear ...

I had the chance to meet Luke Haas at the yearly comic-festival at Contern, where he sold me a copy of the "Lëtzebuerger Rocklexikon II". Rock is always kind of histories to tell and Luke did a great job in collecting an archive for these bands. He died some years ago but his work has survived him.

 Thierry Van Werveke

First I saw Thierry in "Troublemaker", a small independent movie from Luxembourg about two guys, leaving prison, starting instantly new robberies, getting catched by the police, going to jail, leavin' it, starting a bank robbery and so on ... a wild and really funny circle of jail & robbery, troubles & shootings through that small & beautiful country. I instantly became a fan of the actor and the musician.

He then became famous in germany as an actor in some popular movies like "Knocking On Heaven's Door" (he's the perfect actor for troublemaking punks ...). But then, at the age of 50, he suddenly died in 2009. He didn't need a doctor - he knew, what was wrong with him.

Thierry was at his best singing in his Lëtzebuerg dialect, somewhere between Jacques Brel, Serge Gainsbourg & Tom Waits. A great and unforgotten artist.

On the rare and never that popular side of the country, there are two rare CD's in the archives. The first is a copy from a friend (burning CDs for friends became popular those days) of the band "Galileo"

Galileo (LUX) - V

There's no further information on this record, Google isn't really my friend and given that there's a european satellite project sitting in Luxembourg called "Galileo"... yep, no further information on that. "V" may be a hint, that there are maybe records from "I-IV" ...

Sleepwalk - Fir Wat?

"Fir Wat?" is luxembourgish dialect for "Why". This EP reached a certain popularity (in Luxembourg ... and, surprise, in my wife's record collection)

If visiting Luxembourg, don't miss "The Family Of Man" ...

Roots At The Beep

The Major has some strange habits. Like recording Gideon Coe and Marc Reilley on BBC as WAV, cutting all the live stuff, coding the tracks to .FLAC and .MP3 and storing them well sorted in his archives at the "Hermetic Garage". A very strange habit, yep, but there has always to be the one crazy guy doing this strange work so you can profit from it in downloading the results here.

As the Major loves Reggae Music since a mystic moment in the year 1975 at the town, where Nostradamus once lived (Salon de Provence in the South of France, where as we know "all the ladies love to dance") when an old french hippie played this "War ina Babylon" longplayer while juggling virtual crepes ... so lets start with a nice collection of roots music from the Beep

Who Are You?

A story is told that, early in his ministry, a delegation of seekers came to Prince Gautama, to sit at his feet and to receive his words of wisdom. They were very impressed by all that the somewhat mysterious young man had to say, until one of them finally asked the prince, “Who are you, anyway? Are you a god?”

“No,” the prince is said to have replied.

“Are you a saint?” asked another.

“No,” the prince replied.

“Are you a prophet?”

“No, not a prophet.”

“Well, then,” all the pilgrims cried at once, “who are you, then?”

And very calmly, the story goes, the Buddha replied: “I am awake.”

Ajoyo

Can't say this was love at first sight, but ... giving the record a second listen pushed me over the cliff and made me fly. Well, it's more than (my first impression) just another try to re-invent classic 80ies jazzrock stuff, and yeah, sometimes advertisements don't lie

AJOYO is born from the vision of French-Tunisian multi-instrumentist Yacine Boularès. It is a melting pot of African traditions, jazz and soul. More than music, it is a joyful afro-beat ceremony, an experience that bonds the musicians with their audience. AJOYO sings in the name of Tony AllenOum Kalthoum, Charlie Parker, Donny Hathaway…

Finally, they wear badges

vs. the anarchistic evil enemy

Hinterwald has left the building

and Major Grubert is going "solo", opening his "hermetic garage"

Lads & gents, it has been a great pleasure and an unexpected honour being part of the "Voodoo Wagon" & the "Floppy Boot Stomp"-crew, but  having 111+ posts here, the time has come to say goodbye and doing one more of my own things.

This is maybe a little bit like Mick Taylor leaving the Rolling Stones making place for Ronnie Wood ;)

As for years before I entered these wonderful rooms I'll stay as a hardcore fan & friend of "the band" - but I want to do things the way I like to handle them, no boundaries in the size of a post ie. and all in all more spontaneously, ignoring (even only projected) expectations of a big audience, more focused on my own little hinterwald universe, mixed with comics and other stuff I'm interested in.

I hope the boss will add my new blog to the blogroll as I'll do it on my "Hermetic Garage" so we can keep staying in touch.

Stay safe & at home, folks, take care of yourself & your friends and family. Bye bye.

Like to have some ecstasy with XTC? (Vol 2: 1980's)

XTC always and from the beginning on were one of the favourite bands in the so called "Hinterwald Scene" (the Püttlingen section, where we also loved The Clash, The Talking Heads and tons of Reggae - the Köllerbach section was more into Westcoast and also Reggae).

When we met on fridays after our PAV ("Püttlingen Alternative Verstaltungsgruppen" = Alternative Event Organizing Groups Of Püttlingen) where we planned cinema or concert evenings ect, we knew what would be played as records in kinda ritual while the joint was jumping & going round and round: The Dead "Terrapin Station", The Tubes "Remote Control",  Boomtown Rats "The Fine Art Of Surfacing", Max Romeo "War ina Babylon", The Clash "London Calling" and XTC "Drums & Wires" ...

Well I know "Terrapin" has to be some kind of sacriledge to a deadhead, but there was this guy, klaus, he became a taxman later on, always levitated while listening to it - and we enjoyed watching him doing so ;)

Those days are gone forever, over and over again, oh yeah ...
